How to Stop Your Dog from Jumping on People: Effective Training Tips

Jumping when meeting people is a common issue that many dog owners face and can be annoying and unsafe for children or elderly that could get knocked over. Teaching your pup that they get attention when all four paws are on the floor will make greeting people easier for everyone. Below are some tips and tricks to help:

-Only give them attention when all four paws are on the ground, if they jump, turn away, cross your arms, and don’t talk to them till all paws are back down. Do not lift your knee, push them or grab their feet, this may be seen as attention or playing.

-Reward behavior, when all feet are down offer them a treat or praise with a calm voice and getting pet.

-Teach your dog to sit when someone approaches or to get attention, as soon as they sit pet them or give a treat, have friends help you practice this. -Make sure everyone is on the same page, all family members need to keep the rule all paws on the ground and let your visitors know before they come over so they can help and enforce the rules.

– PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Taking your dog to different environments and have multiple people help you with learning this behavior will help set your pup up for success!
