How to tell if my pet is dehydrated

Dehydration occurs when animals lose more water and electrolytes than the body is currently taking in.  If this becomes severe it can become dangerous.  Here are a few ways to check if your pet is dehydrated at home that might prompt a veterinary visit.

  1. Check gums and elasticity of skin – gently lift your pets lip and pinch the skin over their neck region. If the gums feel sticky or the skin doesn’t immediately go back to normal then they are likely dehydrated.
  2. Other physical signs of dehydration include eyes sunken further into the head than usual, unwilling to walk, eat or drink, concentrated smelling urine or darker color than usual.

If you are ever unsure or your pet is displaying signs of dehydration please have them seen by a veterinarian right away.
