Canine parvovirus, often called Parvo, is one of the most serious and fast-acting illnesses we treat at Bell Parkway Veterinary Hospital. It primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs, attacking their gastrointestinal systems and weakening their ability to fight off infections.

Because Parvo progresses so quickly, early detection is the single most important factor in a successful recovery. We want our Surprise, AZ neighbors to feel empowered with the knowledge they need to protect their furry family members.

What Is Canine Parvovirus?

Parvo is a highly resilient virus that targets the lining of a dog’s intestines. This damage prevents them from absorbing life-sustaining fluids and nutrients, leading to:

  • Severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Persistent vomiting and foul-smelling diarrhea.
  • A dangerously weakened immune system.

Why Parvo is a major concern:

  • High Resilience: It can survive in Arizona soil and on surfaces for months, even through extreme temperatures.
  • Highly Contagious: It spreads through direct contact with infected dogs or contaminated environments (like shoes, bowls, and grass).
  • Rapid Progression: A healthy-looking puppy can become critically ill within just 24 to 48 hours of showing symptoms.

Early Warning Signs: Acting Fast Saves Lives

In its earliest stages, Parvo can look like a simple stomach ache. However, because we are open every day from 7 am to 9 pm, you don’t have to wait to get answers. Watch for these red flags:

  1. Sudden Lethargy: Your usually bouncy puppy is suddenly tucked away and sleeping excessively.
  2. Loss of Appetite: Complete refusal of food or their favorite treats.
  3. Vomiting: Persistent or severe vomiting that prevents them from keeping water down.
  4. Bloody Diarrhea: Often accompanied by a very distinct, strong odor.
  5. Fever or Chills: A noticeable change in body temperature.

If your pet is experiencing persistent vomiting or diarrhea, call us at (623) 282-4900 immediately. These are considered urgent care symptoms.

How We Treat Parvo at Bell Parkway

While there is no “magic pill” to kill the virus, we provide intensive supportive care to give your dog’s immune system the time it needs to fight back. At our Surprise facility, we offer:

  • Rapid Testing: On-site diagnostics to confirm Parvo within minutes.
  • IV Fluid Therapy: Vital for correcting dehydration and maintaining blood pressure.
  • Symptom Management: Medications to stop vomiting, manage pain, and prevent secondary infections.
  • Expert Monitoring: Our team of doctors and technicians provides constant care to respond to any changes in your pet’s condition.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

The most effective way to keep your pet safe is through a complete vaccination series. At Bell Parkway Veterinary Hospital, we offer Affordable Health Plans specifically designed for puppies and adult dogs. Our plans include:

  • Distemper-Parvo Vaccinations: Ensuring your pet is protected year-round.
  • Regular Wellness Exams: To monitor overall health and catch issues early.
  • Vaccination Warranties: Added peace of mind for responsible pet owners.

Until your puppy has finished their full series of shots, we recommend avoiding high-traffic areas like dog parks, pet stores, and public trails where the virus may be lingering in the soil.

Trusted Care for Your Family

At Bell Parkway Veterinary Hospital, our motto is to treat your pets as if they were our own. We understand how scary a Parvo diagnosis can be, but with early intervention and aggressive care, many dogs make a full recovery.

If you are worried about your pet’s symptoms or need to get them started on a vaccination schedule, we are here for you in Surprise. We are open every day, 7 am – 9 pm, to provide the care and support your pet needs.

Call us today at (623) 282-4900 or visit us at 15495 W Bell Road to ensure your pet is protected.

I'm so glad for all the animal lovers here because I have a spunky and somewhat naughty pug HOMER that won't let me touch his toenails to cut on my own. So the day of my appointment The technician and the doctor both listened to my concerns about Homer's behavior for his toenail trims.... And just like that Homer got some relaxing medication and they were able to get it done!! Even if it took 4 technicians to to help wrangle and cut them!! THEY WERE GREAT!! I'M DEFINITELY GOING BACK!!

We shopped around for reasonable dental treatment for my 11 pound, 5 year old dog. I am glad I did and ran across this veterinarian hospital close to my home. He was put under anesthesia, had a deep cleaning, CT scan, preanesthesia blood work, 3 teeth extracted, treatment for inner ear infection, and a shot for pain and excessive nausea which he suffers from after anesthesia ... all this for less than the price of several vets in the area. The building is top notch and so was the staff and Dr. Oram. I am glad I took a chance on this office and will be returning and referring others to this office. Thank You! Fitzy says hi!

They really helped me in a time of need to put down my old dog Bear. He was a tough situation and they handled it so well. They cared for him so well and tried their best to take the upmost easiest way to put him down. Highly recommend them and will be back with my other animals.

From the moment I walked into this vet, i was heard & seen, as well as my baby girl. They did everything they could to ensure she was getting the care she needed. They were able to get my girl into surgery for a blockage the same day & left nothing uncovered so that we would understand. Unfortunately due to my baby girl having to have her quality of life compromised, I had to decide to euthanize her. They updated me through every bit, sent pictures, loved on her & made her as comfortable as could be & were compassionate & just as heartbroken as us. Thank you to this vet hospital & staff, you guys are truly amazing. Thank you for trying to save my girl, I highly recommend this Vet for any needs of your beloved furry pets 🤍
